Understanding smoking in Oklahoma

Many Oklahomans still smoke; according to the Truth Initiative, about 15.6 % of adults in Oklahoma smoked in 2022. Rates have fallen over the past decade, but smoking remains a leading cause of preventable disease in the state. High‑quality cessation programs are needed to help our neighbors live longer, healthier lives.

How hypnotherapy fits into a quit plan

Hypnotherapy is a complementary behavioural therapy that uses relaxation, guided imagery and positive suggestion to help you change the thoughts and habits tied to smoking. During a hypnotherapy session you remain aware and in control; the hypnotist guides you into a deeply relaxed state and introduces suggestions to reduce cravings and strengthen your motivation to quit.

What Does the research say?

Our experience employing hypnotherapy to help our clients quit smoking has been just as effective and even better in many cases to what industry research has shared.  For example, 2014 randomized controlled trials: This large RCT in hospitalized smokers compared a single 90‑minute hypnotherapy session with a 30‑day course of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). Patients receiving hypnotherapy vs the NRT were significantly more likely to be nonsmokers at 12 weeks (43.9 % vs 28.2 %) and 26 weeks (36.6 % vs 18.0 %). In fact, multivariable analyses found that patients in the hypnotherapy and hypnotherapy + NRT groups were over three times more likely to abstain from smoking at 26 weeks than those on NRT alone. We believe hypnotherapy can be a useful tool when integrated into a comprehensive quit strategy that includes lifestyle changes, counselling and medical support as needed.

Our approach

  • Certified expertise: We are a MHS‑certified hypnotherapy practice - trained under the best leading experts in the field. We've completed advanced coursework in smoking cessation and behavior change.

  • Personalized sessions: Your smoking triggers are unique. We spend time learning about your history, routines and motivations to tailor each session. Common triggers include stress, certain social settings, morning routines and driving. We address these one by one.

  • Safe and ethical: Hypnotherapy is generally safe when performed by a trained professional. We never guarantee instant success or permanent results, because each person responds differently. Some clients experience a dramatic reduction in cravings after one or two sessions; others require several sessions and additional support. We will work with you to determine the best plan for your needs.

  • Integration with other support: Hypnotherapy works best alongside proven quit tools—counselling, nicotine replacement therapy, prescription medications, support groups and healthy lifestyle changes. We’re happy to collaborate with your healthcare provider to ensure a holistic approach.

What to expect during your sessions

  • Session length: Hypnotherapy sessions typically last 60–90 minutes. You’ll begin with a conversation about your goals and challenges, followed by relaxation techniques and guided imagery. Many clients describe the sensation as similar to meditation or a daydream.

  • Number of sessions: Most clients see benefits after three to four sessions, though this varies. We will reassess your progress at each appointment and adjust the plan accordingly.

  • After the session: You can drive and return to normal activities immediately. We may provide audio recordings or exercises to reinforce the work done in the session. Following through on these practices will improve your results.

Local support and resources

Quitting smoking is easier with a strong support network. We encourage all clients to take advantage of additional resources, such as:

  • Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline – a free 24/7 quit line that offers coaching and nicotine replacement supplies.

  • Local counselling and support groups – group therapy or peer support can bolster your motivation and provide accountability.

  • Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) – patches, gum, lozenges or prescription medications can reduce withdrawal symptoms when used under a doctor’s guidance.

If you have other health conditions or are pregnant, please consult your physician before beginning hypnotherapy.
